Mark is a Senior Consulting Actuary with United Health Actuarial Services, Inc. (UHAS). He is a leader in the firm’s medical and supplemental insurance practice and also provides expert witness and risk management services. He currently serves as the Appointed Actuary for two health insurance companies.
Mark has more than 35 years of actuarial experience in the life and health insurance industry and has held top actuarial and risk management positions at three Fortune 500 insurers. Immediately prior to joining UHAS, Mark was Senior Vice President of Strategic Development at Assurant where he was a strategic advisor to the supplemental health business, evaluated and developed business plans for international opportunities for Assurant’s health products, and explored M&A opportunities. Prior to that, he was SVP and Chief Actuary of Assurant’s group medical business.
In addition to his life and health insurance actuarial background, Mark has worked as the global head of risk management at an international insurer. For three years, he led the Society of Actuaries’ Enterprise Risk Management sub-group of the Risk Management Task Force.
Mark has participated in a number of Society of Actuaries and American Academy of Actuaries Working Groups including those for Long-term Care Pricing, Health Insurer Solvency, and Risk Based Capital for Health Insurers. Mark has also spoken at several Society of Actuaries meetings on topics such as Critical Illness product trends, Long-Term Care Rate Filings, and Supplemental Health Insurance. Mark authored a paper that appeared in the October 2012 Health Section Newsletter entitled, “Is there currently an Underwriting Cycle?”
Mark is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst, a Fellow of the Life Management Institute, and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.
