Matthew S. Gates

Matthew is a Consulting Actuary with United Health Actuarial Services, Inc. (UHAS). He specializes in long-term care insurance.
His current responsibilities include building and updating long-term care experience models and providing support to our valuation, rate filing, and regulatory reporting work.
Matthew has worked in the life and health insurance industry for over 8 years and has over 4 years of experience working with long-term care insurance. His long-term care expertise includes reviewing and signing rate increase filings and objection responses, preparing filings and exhibits, performing end-of-year asset adequacy testing, and reviewing and updating liability assumptions and projections. He has knowledge of both projection and valuation modeling, including first principles modeling.
Matthew’s experience in life insurance includes repricing term 10, 15, 20 and 30 year products, ad hoc competitive intelligence analysis, creating illustration spreadsheet models for new products, and financial reporting. He also calculated GAAP and statutory reserves for group life, accident, waiver, whole life, and survivor income benefit lines of business
Matthew is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Statistics from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
